OHLA, in collaboration with ACS, has begun work on the P3 Purple Line Light Rail project in Maryland (United States), for a joint amount of 2.21 billion euros (2.3 billion dollars). The joint-venture team, known as Maryland Transit Solutions (MTS), is the replacement design-build contractor responsible for performing the design and construction of the 16.2-mile, 21-station light rail system.

The contract has been awarded to MTS by Purple Line Transit Partners (PLTP). PTLP holds the Public-Private Partnership Agreement with Maryland Department of Transportation and the Maryland Transit Administration.

The 16.2-mile Purple Line will carry riders between Bethesda in Montgomery County and New Carrollton in Prince George’s County. The system will also provide direct connections to four branches of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority system, all three MARC commuter rail lines in the Baltimore-Washington metro area, and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line. The Purple Line will transform transportation in the Washington, D.C. region by adding convenient light rail service with an interconnected transit system.

While supporting community revitalization and transit-oriented development, the Purple Line also will help reduce dependence on auto travel: After service begins, the Purple Line is estimated to take 17,000 vehicles off the road daily.
