The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA METRO) awarded OHLA USA the design and construction project of the new Union-Patsaouras Plaza Busway Station, located in downtown Los Angeles. This is the first design-build project awarded to OHLA USA in California.

The project goal was to create easier connections for the Bus Rapid Transit patrons at Union Station and add value to under-utilized property. The challenge was to realize those goals while not impacting the adjacent 101 Freeway traffic and the existing infrastructure. OHLA’s efforts on the project ENR California recognized the Union-Patsaouras Plaza Busway Station as the 2021 Regional Best Projects winner in the Transportation category.

The scope of work included the widening of both sides of the El Monte Busway Bridge to accommodate the new station platform, constructing an enclosed pedestrian walkway from the platform to a pedestrian overcrossing bridge and a new pedestrian landing at the existing transit plaza. The project also entailed the installation of a stairway and an ADA-compliant elevator. During the works of the construction site, among other materials, 10,000 square feet of stainless-steel panels were used for the construction of the pedestrian bridge and 7,000 linear feet of drilled piles to create a firm foundation.

The historic Union Station serves travelers going near or far. Connections include long distance and intercity rail, Southern California regional rail and local and urban light rail within Los Angeles County. Bus services surround the area immediately adjacent to Union Station, providing access to the station or connecting train travelers to every corner of the county.

Benefits to the community

  • The pedestrian bridge will allow passengers to walk directly from the Patsaouras Transit Plaza to the new and improved busway station, eliminating a long, convoluted walk across the Union Station property to the current stop located on the El Monte Busway, at Alameda Avenue.
  • New lighting and closed-circuit TV systems (CCTV) provide commuters a safe passage through the Union-Patsaouras Plaza during nighttime
  • New bus, light rail, and train connections will be added to this transportation hub to increase availability and access that will promote stress free, safe, and convenient commuting.
