The OHL Group joins a number of solidarity initiatives in Spain and Mexico

August 8, 2014

The OHL Group, in tune with its commitment to the wellbeing and progress of society set out in its Community Involvement Framework Plan, has participated in a number of initiatives in the areas of education, the social integration of underprivileged groups and active participation in sports as examples of living and working together, three of the pillars on which its effort in community involvement, sponsorship and patronage is supported.

The Chairman of OHL Industrial, Antonio Berjillos, participated in a day-long school meeting organized by the Empieza por Educar Foundation (ExE – Start-by-Educating). This initiative, set in the framework of the Un día en el aula (A Day in the Classroom) program, gave OHL Industrial’s Chairman the opportunity to convey to the students the importance of the culture of effort in the attainment of academic and career successes, as goals “are reached through work and a solid educational background gained through effort and many hours of study”.

The objective of the Empieza por Educar Foundation is to contribute to improving education in Spain, to curtail the high school dropout rate and to enhance the prestige of the role of teachers. Its aim is to improve the learning process, generate aspirations and open up opportunities for the secondary school students most seriously threatened by school failure.

OHL Volunteers on a pilgrimage to Santiago

For the fourth year in a row, OHL Volunteers have participated in the “Camino de Santiago” (Way of St. James) pilgrimage, an initiative promoted by the Adecco and Madrid Down Syndrome foundations, aimed at young beneficiaries of the many programs carried out by Down Madrid.

During three days of the pilgrimage, between the 10th and 13th of July, around twenty volunteers from different OHL delegations in Spain accompanied 20 young people with Down Syndrome during the last two stages of the “Camino de Santiago”: Predouzo-Lavacolla and Lavacolla-Santiago de Compostela, as well as on their arrival at the  cathedral of Santiago, where they were met by members of their families who joined with them in the religious ceremony and the award of the “Compostelana” (Pilgrim’s Certificate).

The initiative, which included walking a distance of more than 100 kilometers (km) between the cities of Sarriá and Santiago de Compostela, during a period of ten days, has served for fostering a spirit of living and cooperating together, development, personal autonomy and the capacity of understanding and expression of the participants, through the organization of a number of workshops and leisure activities.

Mayakoba 3k, a family race for solidarity

In Mexico, OHL Volunteers celebrated the first Mayakoba 3K Family Race for the purpose of raising funds for the construction of the first park for children with disabilities, a project of DIF Solidaridad (System for the Full Development of the Family).

The initiative, which attracted more than 300 participants with the support of 80 OHL Group volunteers, will benefit more than 500 children in the area where the Mayakoba resort is located.
