OHL builds a salmon farm in Florida (U.S.) for Atlantic Sapphire for 83 million euros ($95 million)
OHL tackles the construction of a salmon farm for Atlantic Sapphire in Florida (U.S.). This $95 million (83 million euros) project combines innovation and sustainability and is the first of its kind to be completed by the firm.
In 2018 OHL was awarded the Salmon Farm project by Atlantic Sapphire, a Norwegian company that pioneers the application of technology for sustainable salmon farming carried out entirely on land. This 35,000 square meters (m2) facility consists of a series of water tanks connected by more than 100 kilometers of pipes.
The project includes 36 growing tanks of varying sizes – being the smallest for eggs that are gradually growing – and has a storage capacity for 1.7 cubic hectometers (hm3) of water, which will be recirculated within the facility. The water in the tanks will be cooled to 15 degrees Celsius and will undergo a progressive transition from fresh to saltwater with the objective of reproducing the natural conditions of the salmon life cycle.
The Salmon Farm project entails a sustainable design with the goal of lowering carbon emissions. Among its innovative features the facility will portrait a 37,000 square meter hurricane-resistant roof with a design that will not allow sunlight to pass through.
It has targeted to produce 10,000 metric tons of salmon per year, equal to five times the current U.S. production, or around 20 percent of annual U.S. consumption.
Other projects in the health and education sector in Florida
OHL is working on numerous singular building projects in Florida, including health, nursing homes, leisure and education facilities. In the education sector, OHL was awarded a project to build an 800-student elementary school for Orange County Public Schools in the Orlando area, one of the largest academic districts in the U.S.
The company is also completing a state-of-the-art Center for Learning, Innovation and Simulation for Miami Dade College (MDC) at their Medical Campus and was recently awarded a Deferred Maintenance Project that includes upgrades and renovations to their electrical systems, mechanical (including chillers and cooling towers), and roofing restoration/replacement.
Other projects successfully delivered in Florida include the expansion and renovation of the 43,761 m2 MDC InterAmerican campus, for which OHL was awarded the 2018 AIA Florida/Caribbean Merit Award of Excellence for Renovations & Auditions, the Institute for Healthy Living, Life Science and Research (21,639 m2), and the Palmer Trinity Classroom Building project consisting of a 1,858 m2 two-story educational center.
