Isabel García Tejerina visits the works at the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Vigo, which OHL is helping construct

The Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, along with the President of Xunta de Galicia -Galician Regional Government-, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has visited the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Lagares, Vigo, which OHL is helping construct through a joint venture (JV).

The project involves executing a new treatment plant and demolishing the existing one, as to at all times guarantee the treatment of waste water supplied. It has been designed for a maximum flow of 12.00 m3/s, equivalent to 800,000 inhabitants, with a maximum daily treatment capacity of 147,000 m3.

This installation has incorporated modern technologies in waste water treatment in order to cover environmental needs, reduce space to the maximum and endow the facilities with greater flexibility in the event of changes in flow, as is the case in Vigo.

The new Waste Water Treatment Plant is being partly constructed over the existing one, which means that the works need to be executed in successive stages. The scarce land available for implementation has required high-performance compact systems to be designed; one of the main innovations is a thermal sludge hydrolysis system, whereby digesters are downsized and the quality of sludge improved. It is the first project in Spain to have contemplated this system.

Once this waste water treatment plant is completed, it will be the largest in Spain by biological processing with biofiltering technology, and one of Europe’s biggest. The OHL Group has participated in designing the technology and waste water treatment systems applied.

Upon completion of the construction works and commissioning of the new WWTP, the current station will be fully demolished, thereby restoring more than 25,000 m2 of land to the marsh.
