OHL: more than a decade fighting against climate change
December 2, 2019
For more than a decade now, OHL is taking part in initiatives that focus on generating awareness amongst its stakeholders and society in general about the importance of actively fighting against climate change, whilst also incorporating various methodologies into its business model that encourage energy efficiency in its infrastructures and construction projects. These procedures help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, to include other steps for the recycling, management, transformation and reuse of construction material.
OHL’s continuous commitment to a low-carbon economy includes quantifying and verifying its greenhouse gas (GHG) activities to reduce emissions in the company’s operations, as well as investing in sustainability projects to compensate such emissions. Furthermore, it follows initiatives promoted by international organizations, seeking to reduce carbon consumption in the business world, to include a registration of a carbon print at the Spanish Office for Climate Change, thanks to which a “Calculo” [“Calculated”] seal has been obtained from such organization, which validates carbon print calculations according to the methodology and principles established by the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Furthermore, this authority has promoted an Agreement for a Circular Economy, to which OHL is party.
The company belongs to the FTSE4Good Ibex benchmark, acknowledging its corporate social responsibility in environmental matters, shareholder relations and human rights. Also, since 2015, it has participated as a sponsor partner in Forética, a company that promotes the integration of social, environmental and good governance issues in Spain and Latin America, in the strategy and management of enterprises and organizations, in the Climate Change Cluster and other groups in sustainability matters, such as the Transparency, Good Governance & Integrity Cluster; Social Impact Cluster and Health & Sustainability Action Group, which strives to transform health into a cornerstone for sustainability.
Recently, OHL joined the New Deal for Europe manifesto, along with more than 270 enterprises all over Europe. This document, endorsed by each enterprise’s CEOs and senior managers, is promoted by CSR Europe, Europe’s leading institution in sustainability and corporate responsibility, with a network covering more than 10,000 enterprises. And, in order to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, promoted by the UN, the company’s various areas of activity are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
