These prizes have been awarded annually since 1983 by the EFE news agency and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation. They celebrate the importance of communication and shared knowledge between Latin American countries and acknowledge the work of Spanish and Portuguese speaking professional journalists in print, radio, television, photography and digital journalism.
Her Majesty Queen Sofía was joined at the presidential table by the Spanish Vice President and Minister for the Presidency, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, the Chairman of OHL, Juan-Miguel Villar Mir, the Executive Director of the EFE, José Antonio Vera, the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Latin America, Jesús Gracia, the Chairman of the Tragsa Group, Miguel Giménez de Córdoba and the Executive Director of Agbar, Ángel Simón.
In the XXX Rey de España International Journalism Awards there were close to 250 candidates from 19 different countries and prizes were awarded to professionals from Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Peru. The winners of each category received 6,000 euros and a sculpture by the artist Joaquín Vaquero Turcios.
Coinciding with the XXX awards, OHL also co-sponsored the publication of the book, Reyes Del Periodismo: 30 años de los Premios Rey de España. Edited by the EFE, this book presents some of the most significant reports and photographs to have won a Rey de España award over the past three decades.
