SATO is awarded the new cruise terminal in the Port of Bilbao
July 23, 2012
The Port Authority of Bilbao has awarded SATO, the OHL Group subsidiary specializing in marine works, a contract for the construction of a new cruise terminal in the Port of Bilbao in Getxo. The contract price is €13.8 million and the execution time is 16 months. Works are expected to begin in late summer.
The new terminal will be attached to outer habor wall of Algorta, located a few meters from the current cruise terminal of Getxo. The land side surface area will be 27,400 m², with a width of 76 m, with a 355 m berthing line and a depth of 12 m.
The Port Authority has decided to address the construction of the new infrastructure due to the growing attraction aroused by Euskadi, the international boom in the cruise industry and the commitment of large-scale shipping to Bilbao as a port of call in Atlantic routes, as well as the home port and destination for many cruises. This has resulted in an increase in the number of cruise passengers and, consequently, the economic impact of this sector.
