OHL to rebuild the Janáček Theater in the Czech Republic

September 11, 2017

The OHL Group, through its Czech subsidiary OHL ŽS, will participate in the reconstruction of the Janáček Theater, part of the Brno National Theater (Czech Republic) built between 1960 and 1965. The theater, which has a maximum capacity of 1,125 spectators, constitutes a cultural center of cross-regional significance. The OHL Group has already participated in the rehabilitation of several of the country’s historic buildings, such as the National Theater in Prague, the Czech Radio building and the Radost Theater (Brno).

The project has been awarded to the consortium of companies formed by OHL ŽS (25%), Metrostav (45%) and IMOS (30%) by the Town Council of Brno and has a budget of close to 20 million euros.

The Joint Venture will carry out the construction of new installations and installations for the performers, as well as the repair of the ceiling. In 2005, repairs were made only to the roof, but not to the support structure composed of prefabricated concrete slabs. These will be replaced by a more modern structure.

The social facilities will be enlarged during the reconstruction of the building and the internal spectator areas will be modernized. In addition, the operative areas of the theater will be completely renovated, including the facilities for employees and the stage technology. The reconstruction of all of the utility networks is also planned, together with the parking area and access to the theater.

Over 50 years of history

Since its opening on October 2, 1965, the theater building has been home to the opera and ballet of the Brno National Theater for over 50 years. It is also used regularly by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra and for the Moravian International Autumn Music Festival.

OHL has been present in the Czech Republic since 2003 and it is one of the company’s eight strategic markets. The following stand out among the main projects executed in the country: the optimization and startup of the railway line between the town of Bystrřce nad Olší, on the border with Slovakia and the city of Mosty u Jablunkova; the construction of the I/42 highway and the Královo Pole tunnels in Brno; the expansion of the University Campus in Bohunice of Masaryk University, in the same city and the construction of the Technical Library in Prague.
