August 20, 2018
OHL has been awarded, in joint venture, the expansion of the Port of Agaete, located on the Gran Canaria Island (Spain). The project has been awarded by the public entity Puertos Canarios, affiliated with the Canary Government Ministry of Public
Works in the amount of 44.6 million euros of which 85% will be financed by the FEDER European funds.
The contract is comprised of the construction of a breakwater will a first alignment slope longitude of 530 m with a 45-ton Cubipod layer and a second alignment longitude of 400 m of vertical caisson dike. It also includes the creation of two berths for ferries, and other complementary actions of paving, beaconing, means for berthing and mooring, urbanization and facilities.
The Cubipod, which is being successfully used in other countries such as Denmark or Algeria, is an RDI development for the construction of the principal layer in port slope breakwaters. It has important advantages with respect to the traditional cube as are its greater structural strength and resistance at the same time as it corrects its disadvantages preventing cobbling and increasing the friction with the inferior layer.
This action is added to the other port projects carried out recently by OHL in this island, as is the construction of a new mooring line parallel to the Nelson Mandela dock, the construction of the África dock, specifically in the third phase of the breakwater in 2013 and in the closing harbor wall of the same in 2015, all of them located in the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (España).
