OHL was awarded a railroad project in Mexico worth €575 million
June 26, 2014
OHL was awarded the construction of the first segment of the suburban railroad in Mexico, which will join Toluca, the capital of the State of Mexico, with Mexico City, capital of the Aztec country. The segment is 36.15 km long and an award budget of 575 million Euro (10,148 million Mexican pesos).
It has been awarded by the General Directorate of Railroad Transportation of the Communication and Transportation Secretariat (SCT) of the Federal Government, which granted the maximum score in this tender to the proposal submitted by OHL, through the Construction of Road Projects in Mexico (CPVM), and its Mexican construction subsidiary, in a 50% consortium with the Construction Company La Peninsular.
Both in length as in budget, this segment is the most important in the future Toluca-Mexico City railroad. It is two way, designed for a maximum speed of 160 km/h and totals 32 km of the 36.15 total length. It will be built on a viaduct. It will have four 200 m long raised stations.
Toluca, capital of the State of Mexico and head of the municipality of Toluca, 66 km away from the Federal District. It has a population above 820,000, which amounts to 2,170,000 in the metropolitan area of the Toluca Valley. This large population generates a strong demand for travel toward the capital of the Republic and justifies the project of a Toluca-Mexico City suburban train as massive passenger transportation line between both cities.
Along with the segment constructed by OHL, this project will be complemented with another two: the twin tube tunnel of La Marquesa, 4.6 km long and the final segment of arrival to Mexico City, La Marquesa-Observatory Station, 17.3 km long.
