December 10, 2015
The OHL Group has been distinguished with the 2015 Potencia Prize in the urban works category, for its activity in the New York Subway (USA). The award, granted by the Potencia publication -a member of the TPI editorial group- is part of the IX edition of the Potencia Prizes for Public Works Machinery and Civil Engineering 2015, which rewards those companies in the infrastructure and construction sector that have included in their projects innovating, effective and environmentally-friendly solutions.
Ramón Gil, Purchasing and Machinery Manager of OHL Construcción, was in charge of gathering the prize, on behalf of the Group, at an act inaugurated by José Manuel Galdón, CEO of the TPI Group, on 19 November in Madrid. During the ceremony -attended by over 150 guests- awards were also granted to works and projects in other categories: tunnels, roads, bridges, demolition and mining works, as well as distinctions to the best public works equipment and the 2015 Potencia Honorary Prize.
With the 2015 Potencia Prize, OHL has again been rewarded for its commitment to technical efficiency, innovation, safety and design. In 2013, the Group also won the prize, in the same category, for its Airport-Gdansk Port Link. Slowackiego IV Route project, in Poland.
Work in the New York Subway
The OHL Group has been awarded relevant rehabilitation and construction contracts for the New York Subway, granted by the New York City Transit Authority. Of interest are renovation works on the Culver subway line viaduct, which is part of the highest urban railway track in New York City, and refurbishment of the Columbus Circle and Cortland Street stations, where new entrances have been opened and existing structures and platforms rehabilitated, amongst other activities. Furthermore, OHL was awarded two contracts to reconstruct the South Ferry station (in November 2014), devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012; and to renovate facilities in Grand Central Station (October 2014), including the construction of a new staircase at Lexington Avenue to facilitate access to the train platform.
Since 2006, OHL has held a prominent position in the USA and operates in ten different states: Florida, New York, Texas, California, Maryland, Illinois, Connecticut, Virginia, Washington DC and Massachusetts. As reflected in OHL’s 2015-2020 Strategic Plan, the U.S. is one of the company’s eight home markets along with Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Spain and the Czech Republic.
