February 8, 2011
The OHL Group has added a new country to the world map of its current projects: Kuwait. OHL International Construction has been awarded a contract to build a viaduct in the state’s capital city.
OHL are involved with 48% in the winning JV, which is made up of four companies, and the contract has a budget amounting to 645.5 million euros. The viaduct will have a length of 11 km and will run along the current route of Jamal Abdul Nasser Avenue, in the urban area of Kuwait City, in a northeast-southwest direction.
This work is part of an ambitious program of urban projects that the Ministry of Public Works is undertaking in Kuwait City to tackle its level of traffic congestion.
The viaduct is to be built with minimum interference to the heavy vehicular traffic on Jamal Abdul Nasser Avenue, for which reason the planned construction method provides appropriate organizational and technological solutions, meeting the needs of the project.
Kuwait is currently one of the Middle East’s busiest in terms of the volume of contracting and construction of all kinds of infrastructures, in order to enable them to meet their current needs.
For OHL this award is the result of a significant effort in business development that it has undertaken in Kuwait in recent years, during which time it has presented offers for various projects, mainly in the field of infrastructure.
The contract fully introduces OHL into the construction market in Kuwait because the project is so emblematic and because of its strategic importance to the country’s main city. It also helps to strengthen its presence in the Persian Gulf area, where OHL is building in Qatar one of the largest and most technologically advanced hospitals in the world.
