May 22, 2013

The OHL Group has been awarded a new contract with the New York City subway, in addition to the one it had obtained for refurbishing the subway station at Cortlandt Street, which was destroyed in the attacks of Sept. 11.

The new contract, which was awarded 100% to the subsidiary Judlau Contracting for 194.3 million euro (258.4 million dollars), forms part of the Second Avenue Subway. This project of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority is the first great expansion of the New York City subway network in 50 years. The new line will run through the East Side of Manhattan and will have an extension of 13.7 km and 16 subway stations.

The works that will be carried out, within the framework of this contract, consist of all the jobs related to the finish works of the structure of the 72nd Street subway station. That is to say, it is an intermediate contract between the excavation of the subway station and the implementation of the signaling and communication systems.

Of all three stations that will be built on the East Side of Manhattan, this subway station, which is the second one under construction on the Second Avenue Subway, will have the greatest capacity of access for passengers. It will have four entrances, of which three will be newly created by Judlau, with 7 elevators and 11 escalators.

Included among the main activities of the contract are the following: implementation of the concrete structure for the subway station platform and for the intermediate level of the same; installation of the ventilation systems, including fans, refrigeration plants and the necessary auxiliary structures; electrical and lighting works, both within the subway station as well as at the entrances; likewise, it includes the finish works of the station (metal finishes, ornamental ironwork, panels for wall cladding, granite, porcelain tiles, installations for controlling the lighting, enclosure systems and exterior coatings, among others).
