October 26, 2016
Tomás García Madrid, CEO and Deputy Chairman of the OHL Group, participated in the Latin American business meeting, Peru, a country with great investment opportunities, organized by the financial newspaper Expansión. The purpose of the event, which was held on the 19th of October at Casa América in Madrid, was to present the investment projects and opportunities offered by this country for the Spanish market. The event brought together institutional representatives from Peru, including Eduardo Ferreyros Küppers, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism; José Antonio García Belaúnde, Ambassador of Peru to Spain; Yamila Osorio and Reinaldo Hilbck, regional governors of Arequipa and Piura, respectively.
During his talk, OHL’s CEO highlighted the basic criteria for the OHL Group when selecting target countries: market economy, respect for individual freedoms, Rule of Law, institutional stability, free capital movement, size (territorial extension and population), growth (GDP), infrastructure deficit, education/technical training of the population and business fabric. The application of all of them has led OHL to establish itself in Peru.
Public-private partnership
Tomás García Madrid emphasized that “the investments in infrastructures in Peru cannot be made by a government singly but rather through public-private partnerships”. Moreover, he reminded his audience that Peru’s infrastructure deficit, which totals 145 billion euros, “could only be addressed through public-private partnering”.
In his talk, the CEO explained that Peru is a “window open to the Pacific and to Asia” and referred to the excellent experience of OHL in Peru, a country where it has had a presence since 1999 through the construction, industrial and concessions areas, and where the Group has “2,600 employees and more than 1 billion euros in projects” and a determination to increase its presence.
