Recycling and environmental measures in Américo Vespucio Oriente
Américo Vespucio Oriente is one of the largest urban road infrastructures in Latin America. This highway, with a 9 km route, runs through 5 of the main districts of Santiago de Chile, and saves more than 40 minutes from one point to another in the eastern part of Santiago.
In addition to all the technical milestones that have been achieved, the project stands out for the implementation of a complete package of environmental measures aimed at mitigating the impact of operations on the local environment of the works:
Recycling of more than 2.3 million kg of steel
As a result, 2,700 tons of CO2 emissions have been avoided and 3056 m3 of water and 8181 MWh of energy have been saved.
Reuse of 1,800,000 tm of materials
The materials from the excavation of the project (tunnels and trenches) have been processed with a proprietary crushing plant and have been used for the manufacture of concrete, granular bases and structural backfill. This has resulted in savings in material destined for landfills and in CO2, due to the reduction of trips to transport material.
164,000 m2 of landscaped areas
The most outstanding area is the one that runs along Américo Vespucio Avenue, with a central strip of parkland approximately 30 meters wide. Pedestrian walkways, recreational areas, bicycle paths, trees, infrastructure and urban equipment have been implemented.
Tree campaign
More than 500 trees from the Américo Vespucio Park have been rescued and transferred to a nursery for replanting once the project is completed.
Compensatory environmental measures
They include a skatepark in Huechuraba, a pedestrian walkway in Cuauhtémoc Park, two clean points in Vitacura, bicycle lanes on El Salto, Turistas and El Carmen avenues, and restrooms in Bicentenario Park.
