Inauguration of the Port of Avilés extension, in Asturias
June 29, 2015
On 23 June, the extension of the Port of Avilés in Asturias was inaugurated, as part of the second phase led by the OHL Group in a Joint Venture. This phase belongs to a three-stage project aimed at increasing port traffic in Avilés thanks to extending the right-hand river basin.
The infrastructure consists of a new pile-supported wharf 496 meters (m) long and 14 m deep; an esplanade for logistics and storage, measuring more than 120,000 square meters (m2); and a 732 m railtrack along the esplanade. The technical aspects of this project include an extension of the 14 m depth, enabling port access to vessels of up to 72,000 tons (t) (previously 65,000 t) and the access of Panamax full-freight vehicles, thereby making the port more operative and competitive.
The inauguration event was attended by José Llorca Ortega, President of State Ports; Belén Fernández, Councilor of Public Works in the Principality; Mariví Monteserín, Mayoress of Avilés, and Santiago Rodríguez Vega, President of the Avilés Port Authority, amongst other authorities. On behalf of OHL, Rafael Martín de Nicolás, President-General Manager of OHL Construction (Spain) was present at the act, amongst other Group executives.
