New intermodal transportation service in Terminales Marítimas del Sureste (TMS) for containerized cargo
December 4, 2015
The start-up of the railway connection between the Port of Alicante and the Renfe Merchandise network has opened up a new development stage for TMS and the Port’s hinterland. This inaugurated service is aimed at strengthening Alicante’s position as a port of entry to Spain for container merchandise traffic traveling along the Mediterranean.
Shipping companies and enterprises operating in the region, looking for a comprehensive solution for container merchandise traffic at this commercial crossroads, now have a new service that is able to support and back up railway traffic with the Alicante terminal.
This railway infrastructure, at the back of dock 21, with a loading platform 450 meters long, provides service to the TMS multipurpose terminal and to the entire Port of Alicante. At this initial stage, a weekly service is planned between both terminals- Alicante and Madrid-Abroñigal, with loading capacity of 1,400 t, providing a comprehensive and sustainable solution by offering intermodal transportation that is able to avoid 60 weekly trucks traveling along the roads between both terminals.
The Port has been consolidated over the last few years as Spain’s main merchandise supplier for the Canary Islands. In turn, this island container traffic represents almost 70% of the total merchandise carried in Alicante dock containers. The Canary Islands receive wine, liquors, fruit and vegetables, canned food, cereal, smoking items and cement for the construction sector. Maritime lines between Alicante and the Canary Islands are able to sustain 2,000 direct and indirect jobs in Alicante. These workers belong to stowage companies, consignees, transit companies, warehouses and carriers, amongst others.
