OHL enters Qatar metro with a 1.1 billion euro contract
May 30, 2013
The OHL Group will participate in the Doha (Qatar) metro works as joint venture partner, following the award of the 1.1 billion euro ‘Major Stations’ package by the Qatar Railway Company.
OHL, in partnership with Samsung C&T and the local firm, Qatar Building Company was awarded the design and build contract for the two flagship stations on the Qatar underground network, namely at Msheireb and Education City. These two modern hubs on the metro line will form major interchange stations for several underground lines and other modes of transport including the railway network.
Msheireb station will be the most prestigious in Doha, and is located in the heart of the city, in the so-called “Msheireb downtown area”, the historical centre, currently part of an ambitious regeneration project.
The Education City station will be located in what is becoming the educational centre of excellence in the region. Education City, an initiative by Qatar Foundation, will link up with the railway network, as it receives students from the Gulf Cooperation Council region.
The total value of the “Major Stations” contract is approximately 5.1 billion Qatari Riyals, around 1.1 billion euros, approximately 400 million euros of which have been designated for civil works with the remainder for provisional sums for electrical, mechanical, architectural and other works.
This project reinforces the presence and commitment of OHL Construction with Qatar, where it is currently constructing the Sidra Research and Medical Centre, which is one of the most technically advanced hospitals in the world, with a contract value of almost 2 billion euros.
The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council are of great strategic importance to OHL. In addition to the contracts in Qatar, OHL is also involved in two of the most technically complex projects in the region: the Jamal Abdul Nasser viaduct in Kuwait and the high-speed railway link between Mecca and Medina.
With this contract OHL reaffirms its international leadership in constructing railway infrastructure. The “Major Stations” contract in Qatar complements other works in this field, which include works in progress and completed underground, tram and rail lines in Miami, New York, Toronto, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Czech Republic, Russia and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as high-speed projects constructed in Spain and Turkey and those that are currently underway on the Mecca-Medina line in Saudi Arabia and the submarine railroad under the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey.
