OHL finalizes the refurbishment project of the 72nd Street Station in New York

January 2, 2017

OHL, through its subsidiary Judlau, has completed the construction of the finishes and fit-out of the structural station shell for the 72nd Street Station, a component of the new Second Avenue Subway in New York.  The Second Avenue Line had been in the planning stages for nearly 100 years, but encountered financial challenges and remained unbuilt, until the MTA resumed efforts to fund and construct Phase One a few years ago.

The Second Avenue Subway, including the 72nd Street station, opened to the public on January 1, 2017, ushering in a new era of travel on Manhattan’s busy and densely populated Upper East Side. The Second Avenue Line is expected to serve 200,000 daily riders and relieve congestion on the Lexington Avenue line.

The $300 million plus station project demonstrates Judlau’s experience in all aspects of station work, from concrete work at the platform and mezzanine levels, including cast-in-place slabs and precast wall sections to installation of station finishes, all while working in a densely populated residential and commercial neighborhood. Work activities included ceiling frame installation, installation of a ventilation system including fan and chiller plants within the station and its ancillary structures, as well as extensive electrical and lighting work throughout the station and the various entrances. The team installed station finishes, including miscellaneous metals, ornamental metals, wall panels, granite and porcelain tile, sunscreens, louvers, and external cladding. Also included were installation of track wall tiles, conduits, and ductwork at the platform level, and construction of new operations and maintenance rooms within mezzanine areas and one of the ancillary structures. Judlau managed multiple disciplines while maintaining schedule and budget.

The station includes two hydraulic elevators, five traction elevators, 10 escalators, and two ancillary buildings. The station artwork consists of portraits in mosaic tile of New Yorkers awaiting a train.

The OHL Group has been present in the United States market since 2006, which has become one of the company’s eight Home Markets. Currently, OHL operates in nine states: Florida, New York, New Jersey, Texas, California, Illinois, Connecticut, Virginia, and Massachusetts, plus the District of Columbia.
