OHL has been awarded a more than €212 million project to rehabilitate at the Throgs Neck Suspension Bridge

OHL, through its subsidiary Judlau, has been awarded a more than €212 million project ($253 million) for the replacement of roadway deck in suspended spans at the Throgs Neck Bridge (TNB), in New York. The project has been awarded by Metropolitan Transportation Authority – Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (MTA TBTA).

The Throgs Neck Bridge was opened in 1961. It is a suspension bridge with six lanes, three in each direction, and it was built because of increasing congestion on the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge, located in the vicinity. The above-mentioned infrastructure connects the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx with the Bay Terrace section of Queens.

The work to be completed in the Throgs Neck Bridge include replacement of existing concrete-filled grid deck with orthotropic steel deck within the suspended spans; installation of new median and side barriers throughout its suspended spans; installation of new fire standpipes between the TNB Bronx abutment and the Queens anchorage; installation of new roadway lighting within the TNB suspended spans and Queens approach; removal and replacement of four suspender ropes; steel-repairs; and strengthening and painting of the TNB main trusses and floor trusses and other associated work.

The project adds to the growing list of bridge projects the company has developed in New York, New Jersey, Boston and Virginia markets. In 2018, Judlau was recognized by the New Jersey Alliance for Action for the work performed at the George Washington bridge, one of the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridges and an architectural icon for 85 years, as one of the 16 leading infrastructure projects in the state of New Jersey.

USA is a relevant market for OHL. Until September, the construction order book amounted to 5,151.5 million euros; the 40% of the total is attributable to projects in USA. For its part, the new awards in the first nine months totalled 1,824.1 million euros, with projects located mainly in the United States (28.7%) and Europe (48.1%).

Presence in the USA

OHL has operated in the USA since 2006. Its projects include the design and construction of the Interstate 405 in California, the single largest project in the company’s history in the USA; the construction of the AirportLink and the State Road 826/836 Interchange in Florida; the expansion of the Interstate Highway 35 East, in Texas; the construction work on the Second Avenue Subway System’s 63^rd Street and 72^nd Street Stations in New York; the  dust mitigation work at the Owens Lake, in California; the reconstruction of the Woods Memorial Bridge and Revere Beach Parkway viaducts in Massachusetts; and the construction of the Elgin-O’Hare (IL-390) expressway interchange in Illinois, among others.
