April 24, 2017
On April 24th King Felipe VI presided the XXXV edition of the King of Spain International Journalism Awards in the Casa de America in Madrid, an initiative promoted by the EFE Agency and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and in which OHL has participated for the past eight years.
These awards, founded in 1983, acknowledge the work of professional journalists in press, radio, television, photography, digital journalism and environmental and sustainable development journalism in Spanish and Portuguese, as well as the most outstanding means of communication of Iberoamerica. A total of 274 candidates from 19 countries were evaluated by the judges in this edition, in which journalism from Spain, Argentina, Costa Rica, Portugal, Colombia, USA, Brazil and Cuba has been acknowledged.
Within the frame of this award ceremony, the XIV Don Quixote Journalism Award has also been given to the Spanish poet, essayist and novelist, Fernando Aramburu Irigoyen, autor of the acclaimed “Patria”, for his article “Estamos hechos de palabras” (We are made of words), published in the El Mundo newspaper and in which he highlights the power of language.
In effect, the intervention of King Felipe has revolved around the use of language as a truthful and rigorous vehicle of information. H.M. has pointed out the need to rely on journalism inspired on “ethical principles and values” as those exercised by the awardees, whom he has defined as “worthy exponents of the strength of journalism in Spanish and Portuguese, and an example of the profession exercised with rigor and independence”, and which also responds to the citizens’ right to be informed with “honesty”, thereby contributing to the “free conformation of their judgements and opinions”.
The President of Congress, Ana Pastor, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Alfonso Dastis, and the State Secretary for International Cooperation, Fernando García Casas have been some of the attendees at the thirty-fifth edition of these awards. Cultural, political, business and diplomatic corps representatives have also attended this event.
