OHL USA awarded its first direct contract in New York

July 13, 2011

After presenting bids in the leading construction programs in the five boroughs of New York City, OHL USA has been awarded its first direct contract in this market with the project known as “Replacement of the Existing Water Siphons between Brooklyn and Staten Island”.

The aim of the project is to replace and lower the level of the two existing siphons between Brooklyn and Staten Island. This will allow the access channel to the ports of New York and New Jersey to reach the necessary draft for the new post-Panamax freighters. The siphon is a secondary/back up water supply for Staten Island in case of failure of the main line, the Richmond Tunnel.

The work consists of the execution of a shaft, 3.85 m in diameter and 3,000 m in length, below the mouth of the Hudson River to place a 1.80 m diameter water pipe inside. The New York City Economic Development Corporation awarded the contract to the 50% joint venture formed of OHL USA and Tully Construction Co..
