OHL will participate in the execution of the Wastewater Outfall Project in New York for €166 million

The OHL Group, through its subsidiary OHL USA, has been awarded to replace existing outfall pipe at the Bergen Point Waste Water Treatment Plant in Babylon, NY for €166 million ($187 million). The contract, to be performed through a joint venture OHL USA (40%), Posillico (40%) and Seli (20%), has been granted by Suffolk County Department of Public Works. This is the largest construction project in Suffolk County in several decades and OHL’s first project on Long Island, expanding OHL’s regional presence in the New York area.

The project includes the construction of a 14,200-foot and 120-inch inner diameter tunnel. The tunnel will be constructed to replace the existing Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) outfall pipe, which carries millions of gallons of treated wastewater, connecting the Bergen Point Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Barrier Island under the Great South Bay. The new tunnel, which will be excavated and concurrently lined using precast concrete segment rings, will address the concerns of potential failure of the current pipe and will have a longer lifespan.

The JV has selected a slurry TBM as the most effective and efficient means of tunnel excavation and elected to use 48-inch wide precast segment liners. Additionally, the team will also complete ancillary work within the tunnel including the installation of new piping and valving, associated plumbing, HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and electrical work.

Other projects in New York

OHL is currently executing several major construction projects in the New York area including Superstorm Sandy rehabilitation work on the Canarsie Tunnel and Queens Midtown Tunnel.

The company has performed other projects in New York, including the renovation of the 63rd and 72nd street subway stations for the new Second Avenue subway line which is the largest expansion of the subway in half a century; the rehabilitation of Corbin Building; the renovation of the South Ferry Station Terminal Complex; the rehabilitation of Culver Street Line viaduct; the reparation of the Montague Tunnel or the restoration of the Columbus Circle Station.
