OHLA awarded a $150 million contract to build Destination Sport Miami, the largest indoor multi-sports facility in North America

OHLA Building, a subsidiary of the Spanish group OHLA, was awarded a $150 million contract to build Destination Sport Miami, one of the largest indoor multi-sport facilities in North America.

Destination Sport Miami will host 35 different sports disciplines. It will have two NHL-regulation ice hockey rinks, an NFL-FIFA regulation turf field, 18 NBA-regulation basketball courts, 36 volleyball courts, 11 USTA-regulation (United States Tennis Association) hard surface tennis courts, a 1,400-square-meter E-Sports and Training Center, a 50-meter Olympic swimming pool, as well as a warm water therapeutic pool and a wave simulator for surfing. It will also provide users with various restaurants and lounges.

The new sports infrastructure will have nearly 1 million square feet of facilities and will be equipped with the latest technologies and training platforms. It is anticipated that the contract will generate close to 230 direct and indirect jobs and once completed, will serve close to 2.5 million visitors annually.

OHLA Building, based in Miami, has more than 25 years of experience in the field of vertical building construction, where it has carried out signature projects in the healthcare field, such as those performed for Baptist Health South Florida, Miami Children’s Hospital, and Jackson Health Systems. OHLA Building is also active in the field of educational infrastructure with important projects for the University of Miami and Florida International University. Other noteworthy contracts include the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans Nursing Home, which is a 120-bed skilled nursing facility, and the construction of the SW 168^th Street Park and Ride Garage, a key portion of the $368 million South Corridor Bus Rapid Transit project, a design-build contract OHLA USA is executing in Miami.

 

OHLA reaffirms its presence in the USA

OHLA has a consolidated presence in the U.S., one of its reference markets. Its activity in the U.S. dates to 2006, when the construction company began operating in the state of Florida. It has since expanded into New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, Texas, and California, through its subsidiaries OHLA USA, Community Asphalt Corporation, OHLA Building, Judlau Contracting, and OHLA Systems & Electric.

Its portfolio includes major contracts such as the I-405 Improvement Project, worth $1.4 billion, the largest project won in the company’s history in the U.S., the Interstate 5 (I-5) freeway Enhancements in California, OHLA’s largest award globally since 2017, with an award budget of more than $379 million. Other initiatives include the project valued at $150 million to improve and rehabilitate the West 79th Street traffic circle and West 79th Street bridge, toll road improvements on I-294 in Illinois, and the construction of State Route 71, between Pomona and Chino Hills, in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, in California, for a total of $86 million. The company has been awarded Contractor of the Year in California and New York, according to ENR.
