OHLA, through its subsidiary OHLA ŽS, is leading, together with Swietelsky and Hochtief, the consortium responsible for the expansion and modernization of the D1 highway in Brno, one of the busiest road hubs in the Czech Republic. This project aims to improve the capacity and safety of the intersection between the D1, which connects Prague, Brno, and Ostrava to Poland, and the D2, linking Brno with Bratislava, Slovakia, and Hungary.

The D1 section in Brno, built decades ago, has exceeded its capacity, causing daily traffic congestion that, during peak demand, can stretch between 10 and 20 kilometers. To address this issue, the D1 will be widened to six lanes in the section surrounding the city, as part of a modernization plan covering 30 kilometers from Kývalka to Holubice, divided into seven interconnected developments.

The project involving OHLA includes the reconstruction of key interchanges at Brno South and Brno Center, the transformation of the Kývalka interchange into an all-directional connection, and the enhancement of other intersections to optimize traffic flow. The works also involve the reconstruction of the roadway, bridges, drainage systems, and the emergency SOS system, as well as the demolition and rebuilding of overpasses. Additionally, real-time traffic monitoring and control systems will be implemented to improve road safety and efficiency.

From an environmental and sustainability perspective, the project will feature new noise barriers and an innovative road surface that will significantly reduce noise levels in nearby communities. Furthermore, the use of recycled materials in construction will contribute to reducing the project’s carbon footprint.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025, with an execution period of 840 days plus an additional 180 days for final works. The total budget amounts to CZK 3,196,383,193 (approximately €130,464,620) and will be funded by the Czech Republic’s Directorate of Roads and Highways with state and European Union funds.

Brno is home to OHLA ŽS, and with this project, the company strengthens its commitment to the community, contributing to an improved quality of life for its residents. The modernization of the D1 will not only reduce travel times and pollution but also enhance road safety and improve the efficiency of maintaining this key infrastructure for the region.
