The project, commissioned by Sociedad Concesionaria Autopista Central S.A. of the VíasChile Group, also includes the construction of a new 1.5-kilometer twin-tube mined tunnel under Cerro Lo Ruiz. The tunnel will feature two unidirectional tubes: the East tunnel (South-North), with two lanes along its entire length, and the West tunnel (North-South), which will begin with three lanes and then continue with two. Both tunnels will connect to the two main urban corridors through modern viaducts.
The project will create a new north-south connection from the General Velásquez corridor to the Américo Vespucio Norte highway. The works will be carried out in three sections: Section A, which includes the development of a viaduct and other structures to link General Velásquez with the new planned tunnel; Section B, which includes the twin-tube tunnel under the hill; and Section C, which plans the execution of four viaducts on three levels to connect with the existing Vespucio Norte highway.
As part of a sustainable development approach, additional works will be carried out that will significantly benefit the community by creating new green areas for recreational use, with an approximate area of 164,000 m². In the municipality of Quilicura, a park will be built during the tunnel construction phase, while in the municipality of Renca two landmark parks are planned.
The first, “Parque Apóstol Santiago”, will offer bike paths, low-water-consumption green areas, multipurpose courts, children’s playgrounds, and various recreational spaces, all designed for community enjoyment. The second, “Parque de Cerros de Renca”, will feature hillside trails, rest areas and viewpoints, an amphitheater, picnic areas, and accessible circuits for all. In addition, full-size football fields will be developed, equipped with changing rooms, barbecue areas, and public restrooms, becoming a new attraction for the Metropolitan Region.
These initiatives will not only enhance the urban environment but also promote an active and healthy lifestyle among residents, reaffirming the commitment to sustainability and community well-being.
OHLA in Chile
Present in Chile since 1981, OHLA has participated in some of the most prominent infrastructure projects in the country since then, such as the Américo Vespucio Oriente I highway, one of the largest road infrastructure projects in Chile.
The project involved the construction of 9.1 km of this urban highway, which currently runs through five municipalities (La Reina, Las Condes, Vitacura, Recoleta, and Huechuraba) of Santiago de Chile and features three lanes in each direction along most of the route.
