Design-build-finance of the largest interchange in Miami. Section is developed in the area between Dolphin Expressway crossroad, that connects the city center of Miami with the airport, and Palmetto Expressway, one of the main north-south communication routes across an industrial area of Miami.
The project involves the construction of four-level motorway junctions and height of up to 32 m, and the construction of new 34 bridges of different types. Project also includes earth moving work, milling and paving, replacing of structures with new ones, drainage, illumination and signaling systems, landscaping and placement of noise barriers to mitigate the impact of the work in the area affected by the renovation.
One of the primary challenges of the project is, in addition to the technical aspects, the construction of the infrastructures with traffic of an average of 300,000 vehicles per day.
Close to the State Road 826/836 Interchange, it is this project to extend and improve one of the most travelled sections of the Turnpike highway in Florida. The section is 5 km long and covers the distance from Bird Road up to the north of the intersection with the SR 836 highway, in northwest Miami.
The extension will include the construction of 10 traffic lanes, of which the inner four will be toll roads. Furthermore, additional lanes will be built to facilitate local traffic between the intersections. The project also contemplates an extension of existing structures and the construction of new ones, to include a 200 m overpass directly linking the new Turnpike toll lanes to the SR 836.
Benefits for society
The new direct connection from State Road-826 to State Road-836 will enhance safety, and increase both capacity and efficiency for motorists using the interchange. The interchange will allow drivers direct access, thereby reducing travel time.
New bridges over the future NW 7 Street and NW 82 Avenue will provide for future connections under the reconstructed highway. ITS cameras and sensors will facilitate real-time traffic updates, and assist in the rapid deployment of first responders and FDOT Road Rangers to clear disabled and accident vehicles from travel lanes.
