Reducing environmental impact on water treatment processes

The new WWTP de Lagares, integrated in the sanitation of the city of Vigo (Spain), was designed and built in joint venture by OHL and pioneers a thermal hydrolysis system for sludge, which increases the energy recovery performance of biogas. In addition, its design makes it the largest plant in Spain for biological treatment with biofiltration technology and one of the largest in Europe.

 

Among its technical characteristics, it should be noted that, for odor treatment, it has a biological deodorization system called biotrickling. Its covered structure also prevents noise and odor pollution. The plant has favored the improvement of the microbiological quality of the bathing waters, allowing the recovery of the blue flag for Samil Beach.

This facility has become a reference infrastructure within the sanitation engineering sector, backed by various recognitions: Segovia Aqueduct Award for Public Works and Environment 2020, awarded by The Caminos Foundation and the College of Engineers of Roads, Canals and Ports; best engineering work at the XI San Telmo Awards 2019 of the Galician Demarcation of the College of Engineers of Roads, Canals and Ports; Prize of Architecture and Rehabilitation of Galicia 2018, awarded by the Xunta de Galicia; Grand Area Award 2017, awarded by the Official College of Architects of Galicia; and international WEX Global Award 2016, Water&Energy category, awarded by the English company Water and Energy Exchange.
