October 22, 2010

On 29 September, the first section to be put in service of Phase III of the Mexican Circuito Exterior (Outer Loop) was officially opened. Over 12,000 people attended the ceremony. The Mexican State govenor Enrique Pena Nieto stated that the beltway, which connects six motorways, has put Mexico State at the vanguard of infrastructures nationally. It was made possible thanks to the strategic alliance with the private sector.

Juan-Miguel Villar Mir, president of the OHL Group, and Jose Andres de Oteyza, in charge of OHL in Mexico, accompanied the Mexican govenor. Jose Andres de Oteyza pointed out as he spoke that “of OHL’s construction projects that are being built in 24 countires, across 4 continents, their number one country is Mexico; and within Mexico, it is in Mexico State where they are carrying out their most important infrastructures program”.

The section that has been opened of Phase III, Lago de Guadalupe – Vialidad Mexiquense, is 10 km long and required the investment of 2,940 million pesos, according to the information released by the Mexican State communications secretary Gerardo Ruiz Esparza. It connects the Chamapa-Lecheria and Mexico-Queretaro motorways. It will benefit 2.7 million users per year who will save 45 minutes on the new route. It is predicted to be used by 7,700 vehicles per day.

The Mexican Outer Loop is being developed in four phases, with a total length of 155 km. Phase I, in operation since the end of 2005, is 52 km long and will be connected to Phase III, 10 km long. The first section of Phase II is 7 km long and was opened 10 December, 2009, connecting to Phase I in the south. This motorway, which passes Mexico City from north to south on the eastern side, is therefore 59 km long, and adding the new 10 km section to the north of the city that runs in an east-west direction brings it to a total of 69 km in operation.
