Mayakoba, committed to development in the Mayan community

July 8, 2016

The Mayakoba tourist complex, developed by OHL in Riviera Maya, has been distinguished as a 2016 Socially Responsible Company (ESR, by its Spanish acronym) granted by Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía (Cemefi) and Alianza por la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en México (AliaRSE). This seal recognizes Mayakoba’s public and voluntary commitment through the implementation of socially responsible management to encourage sustainable development in the Mayan community and environmental preservation.

This distinction follows the Best of the Best prize received by the Rosewood Mayakoba Hotel, recognized for the second consecutive year by the Travel+Leisure México magazine as the best hotel in Mexico. Furthermore, the Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Rosewood Mayakoba Hotels have received the “S Distinction” from Mexico’s Secretariat for Federal Tourism (SECTUR), which endorses good sustainability practices in the Mexican tourist sector.

The Mayakoba tourist complex has received the ESR 2016 Distinction after satisfactorily meeting the standards established in strategic fields of corporate social responsibility. This seal recognizes its effort to implement economic plans in favor of the development of the Mayan community through social projects; the action plan of Volunteers OHL Desarrollos-Mayakoba; and sustainable management recognizing the interests of its various stakeholders in the search for environmental preservation, given that Mayakoba, covering a surface area of 650 hectares of great ecological value, is an example of worldwide sustainability as it constitutes the natural habitat of nearly 200 species, to include birds, fish, reptiles, crustaceans and mollusks.

Mayakoba is one of the world’s top-rank luxury tourist complexes along the coast. Its first phase (250 ha) includes five top luxury hotel complexes, three of which are already running: Rosewood, Banyan Tree and Fairmont. The Andaz Hotel (Hyatt’s luxury brand) is under development, as well as the Fairmont Heritage fractional project. Mayakoba includes El Camaleón golf course, which has made history by becoming the host of the first PGA Tour event held outside the USA and Canada. Execution of the second phase of the Ciudad Mayakoba project (400 ha) has already commenced (homes, shopping and leisure areas and a golf course).
