The OHL Group is awarded an urban motorway in Gdansk (Poland) for 221 Million Euros

OHL is already executing several projects in this country, to include two railway works with a joint budget of 229 Million Euros.

The joint venture led by OHL (55%), of which the Polish group PBG is a member (45%), has been awarded the “Motorway linking the airport to the Gdansk port (Slovak route), section IV” project. This project, commonly referred to as “Slowackiego IV”, was awarded by the Infrastructure Investment Management Company of the City Council of Gdansk (Poland).

The budget for the works amounts to 221.4 Million Euros, over a 36-month execution term. It covers a 2.4 km section of the motorway that crosses an urban area of the city of Gdansk, designed to reach a speed of 120 km/hour.

Its basic feature is the execution of two twin tunnels under the mouth of the River Vistula in the Baltic Sea. Each tunnel will be 1,075 m long with a 11 m free diameter circular cross-section, two lanes and shoulders in each. Both tubes will be interjoined with seven cross emergency passages, with a 12 m2 free section and 20 m long. The lining of the tunnels will use prefabricated reinforced concrete voussoirs, 60 cm thick. The River Vistula will cross over along 500 m, with a 9 m guard over the tunnel axis, approximately halfway along its span.

The tubes will be excavated with a “hydroshield”-type excavator, 12.56 m wide, specifically designed and ordered for these works. It will be OHL’s widest and longest excavator of the ones it is currently operating.

The OHL Group obtained the award of its first contracts in Poland in 2010 and, since then, has participated in various projects there, to include two railways works tendered by the Czech subsidiary OHL ŽS with a joint budget of 229 Million Euros. The contracts in both cases cover the updating of railway lines, one for 131 Million Euros and another for 98 Million.
