OHLA promotes circular economy in a pilot project for collection and recycling of construction materials

November 28, 2022

OHLA is committed to the reuse of materials in its projects, promoting circularity. An example of this environmental commitment is its participation in the pilot project for the collection and recycling of used paper sacks from construction materials, an initiative of Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, in which several construction waste management and recycling technology partners are also collaborating, with the aim of giving these materials a new life.

Specifically, OHLA has launched this pilot project in the Madnum project, Inmobiliaria Colonial’s Campus in Méndez Álvaro, the largest office complex in Madrid’s M-30, where it is constructing an office building with 55,135 m2 of floor space. In just three weeks of implementation, 10,000 used sacks (around one ton) have been collected and will be recycled for the production of new paper packaging.

Sustainable certifications

The existence of new recycling technologies, the capacity to develop this initiative on an industrial scale, together with an efficient collection system, will make it possible to recycle the sacks by recovering their fibers to convert them into new paper packaging. This process will grant them recognition as a sustainable material throughout their life cycle.

This initiative is in addition to other sustainability and energy efficiency criteria that OHLA is applying in the Méndez Álvaro Campus project in Madrid (Spain), with the aim of achieving Leed Platinum certification. This guarantees that the building will be energy efficient and that its construction materials have been selected according to sustainability and reuse criteria, that it will make use of alternative energies and that it will meet the highest environmental quality standards.
