OHLA, Valoriza and Acciona set up joint venture for waste collection in nine districts of Madrid

Sustainability and source separation of the various waste fractions are core terms of the contract

October 31, 2022

The joint venture formed by three leading companies in the industry, OHLA, Valoriza and ACCIONA, has begun to provide waste collection services in the eastern area of Madrid (Lot 2), in the districts of Retiro, Salamanca, Chamartín, Moratalaz, Ciudad Lineal, Hortaleza, Vicálvaro, San Blas-Canillejas and Barajas, with a total population of approximately 1.2 million inhabitants. The term of the contract is six years.

Citizen service, source separation of the various waste fractions and sustainability are the focus of this new contract, converging in compliance with the new waste law.

One of the most important improvements made by the consortium is the progressive renewal of the fleet of vehicles and machinery for a new, more efficient and sustainable one, in line with the environmental commitment of the city of Madrid.

The new vehicles to be incorporated will be powered by ‘ZERO emissions’ electric motors and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines with ECO environmental qualification. The main objective is to reduce the environmental impact generated by the service. In addition, electric energy from renewable sources will be used.

The new contract will more than double the frequency of paper-cardboard waste collection and will also increase the collection of cardboard discarded by businesses in the busiest areas of all districts. This will be possible thanks to a 50% increase in the number of personnel dedicated to this purpose and an increase of more than 100% in the number of top-loading trucks.

The entire waste collection service will be controlled by new digital applications that will result in an ergonomic and rational service, reducing its interaction with the rest of the city’s life.
